Brothers: A Great Thriller You've Never Heard of

I'm sure you know the actors Jake Gyllenhaal and Tobey Maguire, or the actress Natalie Portman, but are you familiar with their drama/thriller Brothers?

As much as I am a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal, I actually had never heard of this movie before this morning. I woke up at 5:00am, as I usually do, and found this hidden gem. I must say that I enjoyed every second of it.

Now, I'm sure you are wondering what this movie is about. Well, before you go looking it up, I can provide you with a short synopsis:

Sam Cahill, a Marine, is set to deploy to Afghanistan. While flying in a helicopter, he and his comrades are shot down with what seems to be a missile or rocket of some sort. After being presumed dead, Tommy, Sam's brother, becomes a frequent visitor at the house of Sam's wife and kids. Time passes, and Tommy and Grace, Sam's wife, grow closer. Unexpectedly, Sam returns home and as you can guess, chaos ensues throughout the entire family.

First off, this movie received a score of 64% on Rotten Tomatoes, a fine score I must say. However, from my perspective, I'd give it something much higher. Thrillers generally have one job, and that is to keep you on the edge of your seat. While this movie didn't necessarily do that the entire time, it supplemented us with other effects and emotions. That sense of intensity was much more prevalent towards the end of the film.

But enough of that, let me tell you why this movie is one to put on your bucket list of movies to watch. While rather a unique kind of thriller, this movie was nothing short of gripping and suspenseful. Like I said earlier, the intensity of the film came up at the end, but the suspense carried on throughout. Now, there are sort of two different stories going on here, both giving of that sort tension, just at different levels. The relationship that began between Grace and Tommy was treacherous and dangerous. The life of Sam overseas in Afghanistan was the suspense you get from war movies. They supplied us with that nail biting material, but each at a different magnitude.

Aside from the suspense that fills the setting of this movie, the actors were phenomenal. That was almost a given for all these grade-A actors and actresses, but it showed here. They were so compelling and believable that I felt as if I was a part of this fictional conflict.

I don't want to spoil to much of the movie, so I'll leave it here. As I say, go and watch this film right now, or plan it for an upcoming movie night. Brothers was intense, captivating, and even a bit heartbreaking.

Don't miss out.

Until next time...
