Netflix: What Should I Watch Next? (Part 1)
I know the feeling. I ask myself this question every time I open up my account. I'm sure you spend many minutes, like me, trying to find something worth watching. Well, I am here to make that a bit easier.
Here are some recommendations for what I believe should be next on your list:
TV SERIES
Luther (TV-14)
Our favorite British actor, Idris Elba, stars in this suspenseful and chilling television series about a police detective (DCI) working in the heart of London. Now, I must say that when it comes to shows on crime, its hard to find originality, and perhaps you may find that while watching this, but Idris Elba puts together a performance throughout that makes Luther much more interesting than most crime series. In addition to Elba, the environment this show is placed in creates the suspense we need for a successful drama. London, where it rains every day (slightly exaggerated), is the home of this so-called thriller series. It's dark. It's gloomy. It's what keeps us, the audience, on the edge of our seats. Also, going back to the plot originality point, I like to believe that this shows differs from many. I don't want to spoil it for you, but there are many events and relationships that are formed in this show that are unique to this crime thriller genre. So, go ahead. Go watch it. It will keep you entertained, and stressed, for its entirety.
Parks and Recreation (TV-14)
I'm almost sure that if you've watched The Office, you've watched Parks and Recreation. If you haven't seen this mockumentry, you need to right this moment. It follows the Parks and Recreation department in the city government of Pawnee. With stars like Rob Lowe, Chris Pratt, Aziz Ansari, Amy Poehler, Aubrey Plaza, and Nick Offerman, it's hard not reach comedy gold. While most of us agree that the first season was perhaps not it's greatest, the following continued to be the what I consider the greatest tv comedy on television. Over The Office? Yes, I know, I may be crazy, but something about the chemistry between actors made this show absolutely hilarious. With every episode came new laughs and it surprisingly held that for the rest of its duration. Once again, if you haven't seen this, go on Netflix right now, and bing watch. It will be the best decision of your life.
Burn Notice (TV-14)
This show sets in Miami, following the main character Michael Westen and his companions. After getting burned, or the equivalent, having your identity discovered, Michael turns to find out who discovers his true identity (he's a spy). Along the way, he and his friends complete side jobs for people who need help. With all the connections and experience he and his friends have, these jobs generally take on a much larger magnitude. And apart from the small jobs are larger plot stories to put him one step closer to his burner. Each episode brings new thrills and explosions, so don't worry about getting bored. Give this one a chance, you may find it to be one of your favorite shows on television. I certainly do.
MOVIES
Fruitvale Station (R)
For fans of Michael B. Jordan, I'm sure you've seen this one, but perhaps you haven't. In fact, I'm sure a lot of people haven't seen this movie. This is a dramatic true story about the final hours of Oscar Grant, an African American shot by San Francisco police on New Years 2009. I don't want to spoil anything for you, other than the fact that we know he dies, so I'll just try to describe its effect to you lightly. I legitimately had so many tears at this movie's finish. The way they built up the character in a matter of an hour and a half still astonishes me. You want everything to go right for him, and when the moment comes, you can't help but feel the worst for him. Please, this movie is extremely underrated, and should be. It is truly a hidden gem. Michael B. Jordan performs wonderfully and gives justice to the man that experienced such a horrific event.
Zodiac (R)
If you are anything like me, serial killers are extremely interesting. Obviously, not in the way they go around killing people, but what goes on in their mind. What makes a serial killer do what they do? It's hard to answer this question. Now, this movie doesn't dive into that question as we, including the filmmakers, still do not know who the Zodiac killer is. That's why he is so infamous. The only information we ever received from him were the coded letters he sent the newspaper. What I love about this movie is they take real cases and research, and attempt their own guess on the identity of the Zodiac. Go see for yourself, and create your own opinion.
The Imitation Game (PG-13)
This movie takes place during World War II. During this time, the Germans used the Enigma code to protect their communication. The British hire mathematician Alan Turing to try and break what seemed like an unbreakable system. While he isolates himself from his team, he works on creating a machine to decipher the code. To find out what happens, make it your next movie choice. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, The Imitation Game documents a pivotal point in our history.
If you've seen all of these, I'm sorry to have wasted your time. Come back again when I post a part 2, and if you are lucky, there will be some that you haven't had the pleasure of watching. If you haven't seen one of these, do what I've been telling you this whole time: WATCH! I am telling you that these are all extremely amazing, and if you find yourself at the end of it hating my recommendation, feel free to throw some words my way. But I'm fragile, so not too many harsh words.
Until next time...
